1874. June 20th. Derbyshire Courier Newspaper. - Bonsall.- The late Robert Clay esq. died at his residence "Nether Green House".Bonsall on Wednesday June 3rd and was buried on the Sunday at St James Church amidst every demonstration of respect and affection. The late Mr Clay was born in the house in which he died in 1799 so that ha had attained the age of 75 years. His long life has been distinguished by benevolence and charity and his funeral was one of the longest ever known in Bonsall. For many years he was an honourary member of the Old Sick Club and also the Band of Hope Lodge of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows and we hear he has left a legacy to each of these societies as well as many other charitable bequests. A considerable number of their friends walked in front of the hearse and 3 mourning coaches and hundreds of sympathising spectaters assembled to witness the internment. The Rector Rev. S. Blackburne feelingly alluded to the loss the parish had sustained and to the great kindness of Mr Clay and speaking of his liberal assisstance to the restoration of the church said that even the pulpit in which he stood was Mr Clay`s gift. The church was crowded in every part and grief of the near relatives of the deceased gentleman is shared by the whole of the inhabitants.
