1824. Nov.3rd. Derby Mercury Newspaper. A hired servant to Joseph Clay of Heanor was committed to the House of Correction having been convicted of willfully neglecting his work.

1855. July 11th. Derby Mercury. Petty Sessions. John Clay was charged with being drunk at Heanor. Fined 21s-6d and costs.

1859. Sept. 21st. Derby Mercury Newspaper.- Coroners Inquest at Heanor on the body of Elizabeth Clay age 57 whose death took place on the Friday before. It appeared from the evidence that the 

deceased had been an inmate  in the Basford Union Workhouse for some weeks prior to Wednesday the 14th on which day she left the house by permission with the intention of returning in 2 days.  On 

arriving at Heanor she bought 2 pennyworth of opium which before going to the Workhouse she had been in the habit of buying and passed the night in a house where she obtained permission to remain 

and left before the family rose next morning. In the afternoon of Thursday she was taken ill and after being laid down on the sofa she became insensible and remained in that state till her death. On a post-

mortem it appeared the death had taken place from apoplexy produced by a large dose of opium.

1861. Aug. 3rd. Mortgage of a house and land at Marlpool by John Clay. (DRO Ref.- D517/BOX/R6/9/8).

1863. April 22nd. Derby Mercury Newspaper.- Petty Sessions. Two men from Heanor were charged with assaulting Thomas Clay at Marlpool. Mr Clay said "I was leaving the Munday Arms between 12 

and 1 o`clock on Wednesday night. I was knocked down by something very heavy and kicked when down, I became quite insensible for a time and when I came to I was standing up and bleeding very much 

from a cut over the right eye". Ann Clay said "On the night of the 14th. I went to the Munday Arms to look for my husband and saw the accused men but did not speak to them".- The men were found guilty 

and senteced to imprisonment with hard labour.

1872. Jan.17th. Derby Mercury Newspaper. Ilkeston Petty Sessions. John Clay a collier of Heanor was charged by Mr Thomas Moore, manager of Shipley with having used a naked light in the Woodside 

Coalmine at Shipley contrary to the rules of the colliery. Fined £1 and costs.

1873. March 5th. Derby Mercury. John Clay a collier of Marpool was witness to a boys death at Heanor who had trespassed down a mine shaft and suffocated.

1881. Feb.25th. Nottingham Guardian Newspaper. Heanor Petty Sessions. John Clay was convicted for habitually neglecting to send his 3 children to school.

1887.  April 26th. Derby Daily Telegraph. Petty Sessions. - Henry Pike was charged with having wilfully damaged a mat basket and a pair of stockings the property of Henry Clay a cripple at Heanor. The 

complanent was in the King of Prussia Inn when Pike put the basket and stockings on the fire. He was fined 19s-2p.

1887. July 6th. Derby Mercury. Heanor. John Clay a cripple well known in the neighbourhood and residing at the lodging house in Beads Yard got up on Saturday apparently in good health and at 9 o`clock 

was overcome by the heat. He went outside into the yard to sit in a chair when he fell and died instantly. He was 75 years of age.
