1832. Derbyshire Courier Newspaper. Captain Clay of Hill Houses. North Wingfield has a loaf of bread weighing two and a half pounds which was baked in 1735 and stamped with the letter N a number of these loaves were sent as presents to the friends of Nicholas Leeke and were considered a rarity.

1849. Nov.17th. Derbyshire Courier newspaper. Accident.- On Wednesday as John Clay Esq of North Wingfield was stepping out of his carriage in High Street. Chesterfield his foot slipped and passing forward on the reins suddenly curbed the horse and drew it over him. Mr Clay was stunned and considerably bruised but not much as might have been as was first apprehended and we are happy to state that he has now almost recovered.

One such case happened in 1794 at North Wingfield when Thomas son of John and Mary Clay died and his body was seized and held to ransom as he owed £20 to a village Innkeeper named Adlington but he did not get his money and after several days buried Clay in the ground in a bacon chest.

Rowley Clay's son Richard Clay left Derbyshire and went to Bishopwearmouth in Durham where he had son Frederick Lord Clay who married Caroline Isabella Spencer. Frederick Lord Clay still retained the property at The Hill in North Wingfield, he was a Solicitor and he emigrated to Australia and had nine children Richard, Frederick, Ann, Harry, Julia, Caroline, Ralph, Geraldine and Percy.
